Mile 57. Sugar Cookie

The Stall with No Sign

Sugar Cookie: The Stall with No Sign, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

The plainest stall on bakery row has no sign, no menu, and the longest line. Trays come out on the hour at Mile 57, warm vanilla sugar cookies straight from the oven, and the smell does the advertising for a hundred feet in either direction.

Who rides with it

Kids on tiptoe who keep the tray schedule memorized better than the baker does. The gatekeeper from Mile 39, walking the whole midway on his break for the untoasted version of his own inventory. Nobody has ever asked what the stall is called.

Pair it at the next stop

Almond Biscotti at Mile 39 is this cookie baked twice so it travels; this is the original, eaten standing right here. It is also the baked proof of the bottle at Mile 53, and one marker up the night shift dresses it for the holidays, Vanilla Bean Noel at Mile 58.
