Cocoa Butter Cashmere: The Quilt House, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

The quilt house at Mile 97 works all winter with the frames let down from the ceiling. Cedar chests line the walls, each one shipped up from the chest maker at Mile 77 with the saffron pinch still tied in the corner, and the room runs on cedar and light spice under the rich vanilla of whatever is cooling in the kitchen for the workers. Every quilt made here is for somebody. The house has never once made one on speculation.

Who rides with it

Quilters with stitch-length convictions. The newest member, who threads needles and keeps her opinions in reserve. Recipients who cry right on schedule. Every quilt takes four months and one argument, and the argument is always about the border.

Pair it at the next stop

The Homebody's showdown closes here: the lamp at Amber Vanilla, Mile 92, and the copper pot at Salted Caramel, Mile 54, make the other two corners of the quiz result.
