Route 109 / Leg 4: HIGH TIMBER

Mile 68. Night Ice

The Cold Fork, Second Crossing

Night Ice: The Cold Fork, Second Crossing, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

Near the top of the climb the road meets the Cold Fork again, higher, younger, and after dark. The same water that ran under the low bridge at dawn crosses under high steel here at night, and it keeps its word: the same cold picks up citrus and woods and a later hour, exactly as promised back at Mile 2. Dawn down there. Night up here.

Who rides with it

Night drivers with the window cracked on purpose. The ones who take the bridge slow to feel the drop. Men who still claim they do not have a scent, arriving after dark right on schedule. The high bridge has a posted speed limit that has never once been threatened.

Pair it at the next stop

Cool Water made this promise at the first crossing, Mile 2, low concrete and dawn mist; the river is the through line. The long throw is ahead: the same cold goes soft under a porch light at Iced Vanilla Woods, Mile 101. This road keeps going.
