What the air does out here
The orchard stand at Mile 25 does its best business in the day's last warm hour, and not all of it is fruit. Golden light comes down the rows sideways, cherry and peach gone soft in the leftover heat, and couples split the final basket on somebody's tailgate. The stand runs out of peaches at the same hour every evening. The owner blames the couples, and the owner is not wrong.
Who rides with it
New couples pretending they came for the fruit. The friend who introduced them and never lets anyone forget it. The owner, who counts the till slowly on purpose, has seen them all coming for years.
Pair it at the next stop
This is where the slow dance from the backyard on Maple Street turns into something; Bump N Grind started it back at Mile 12. And if it keeps going the way these things go, the toast pours at Peach Bellini, Mile 30.
