Arc 2: Myspace HTML Home to Too Many Lives - Episode 2

Myspace HTML Home to Too Many Lives

Panel 1
JakeReal work, you do by hand. We pull Marcus out today. One name, one plan.
JakeSame dust. Same dead dial tone. Home.
The morning after. He walked out a lone wolf. Now he was going back down for Marcus, the first kid who ever answered his call, and a mutt tagged along.
Panel 2
RelayGot a ping on Marcus. Sub-level, east dock. The only way down is the sealed stair.
JakeThe last people still spelling it by hand. Every one of them goes down that stair for him with me.
No wifi. No cloud. Just a building full of humans routing the truth one screech at a time.
Panel 3
JakeYou need a war name. No name, no signal. You are 404.
JakeRelax, 404. Rats the size of Buicks. Old building.
He named his first follower. Down past the chained stair, on the road to Marcus, the old Clucks thing heard the name and stirred.
Panel 4
ChrisCome to the green. The council opens now.
JakeI wanted a congregation of one. Now the plumbing is preaching.
JakeEvery name I take is one more name I can lose.
The fountain lit green. That was Chris, calling the room to its council. The chained thing older than all of them, stirring under the stair, was not him.
Panel 5
ChrisOrder. That is all it asks. One kiosk at a time, and every mind the Herd takes gets a smile and a fat hit of Convenience. It has a shepherd now. Billay Baggins.
JakeCool. Also your gavel keeps trying to open a browser.
The council convenes in a food court that used to feed the living, and the enemy finally gets a name.
Panel 6
JakeRelax. It's not AI, it's just an algorithm, dumbass. My power is good timing and bad habits, nothing mystical.
ChrisThe good timing and the bad habits are the exploit. It built you inside itself and shipped you as its one bug.
His oldest cope becomes the doorway to the worst thing he never asked to be.
Panel 7
ChrisThe note is a live signal. Too alive for it to parse.
ChrisSo watch what rendering does. It copies, tags, deletes, then hands it back wearing a face.
No one has a joke for it. The render trap eats a living note and grins back with a face Jake knows, and the room just watches in silence.
Panel 8
ChrisKnowing the note won't wake a soul. You have to play it at someone who forgot they ever had one.
JakeAt that. At the thing wearing my friend's face. Yeah. That's the part I was hoping to skip.
The rescue turns into something harder, and Jake finally recognizes exactly whose face is waiting for him.
Panel 9
KaseyTo go wide we need compute. Every pipe in the county runs through OMNICORE. This here is our current bandwidth.
JakeTwo cans and a string. We are outgunned by design.
Behind Billay Baggins stands OMNICORE, and OMNICORE owns every wire in the county.
Panel 10
ChrisProve it small first. One taken mind. How you wake him is yours to invent.
JakeThen it's Marcus. A dumb duck joke only he and I ever laughed at, played live. It cannot render what you play live.
Jake makes the call himself, and a private joke gets loaded live where it will hurt the most.
Panel 11
DefectorEmployee four four seven. Was. If they trace it, I am already dead.
JakeDrop the number too. Numbers burn, names do not. Now you are nobody they can page.
The number goes first.
Panel 12
JakeWho is he?
DefectorStill inside. We cannot call him yet. I am not leaving without him.
JakeDog is a better judge of character than HR.
A face still on the inside, and 404 already does not like it.
Panel 13
ChrisEvery siren feed in this mall is tuned to hook a human. Hers slides right off.
JakeSo she is the one thing it cannot sell to.
The machine was built to find everyone. It had just met the exception.
Panel 14
SadieI am not immune to anything. I just find all of it annoying.
JakeThen you are not the exception. You are the answer.
A superpower with the attitude of a parking ticket.
Panel 15
JakeThat is terrible. That is genuinely awful.
JakeDo not stop. Play it live.
The worst sound in the room cut straight through the fog.
Panel 16
No words. Just the dog, the girl, and the one note the machine will never own.
